Research & Scholarship

Theory of Mind, AI & Schizophrenia

Neuropsychiatry Lab – Dr. Sunny Tang, Zucker Hillside Hospital

Summer 2023 – Present

I am currently working on a study exploring how large language models (LLMs) perform on Theory of Mind (ToM) tasks. Drawing from theatrical script analysis, the project examines how both humans and machines infer intention and subtext through language. The research also investigates ToM disruptions in schizophrenia, using LLMs as a model for linguistic and cognitive pattern recognition. This work won second place at the 2025 Northwell Academic Symposium, was presented at Grand Rounds at Zucker Hillside Hospital, and has been accepted to the AMA Research Challenge Poster Symposium. See poster & abstract here.

Leadership & Innovation in Psychiatry

KLAR Leadership and Innovation Scholar
Zucker School of Medicine

Spring 2023 – Present

As a KLAR Scholar, I co-designed and facilitated an interprofessional workshop on conflict resolution for physician assistant and medical students. The workshop used the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument and simulation-based learning to teach practical teamwork strategies in high-pressure clinical scenarios. I also conducted a scoping review and presented a poster on ketamine-assisted psychotherapy as a potentially scalable intervention for treatment-resistant depression.

Clinical Focus: Geriatric Psychiatry

My commitment to older adults was shaped by caring for a beloved grandparent and deepened through volunteer work in Mount Sinai's Delirium Program and the Mobile Acute Care for Elders (MACE) team. During medical school, I completed a year-long geriatric psychiatry continuity clinic at Zucker Hillside Hospital under Dr. Honey Win's supervision, where I led patient encounters, presented biopsychosocial formulations, and developed skills in managing diagnostic complexity and family systems.

Geriatric psychiatry appeals to me because it demands narrative depth, diagnostic nuance, and the integration of medical and psychiatric care — all while centering patients' life stories and involving families as partners in treatment.

What I'm Working On Now
  • Completing my first-author manuscript on LLMs and Theory of Mind in schizophrenia

  • Developing an AAGP Scholar educational module on AI adoption barriers and strategies for geriatric psychiatry clinicians

  • Applying to psychiatry residency programs with strong training in inpatient psychiatry, psychotic disorders, research, and commitment to underserved populations
